After Sophie went inside, I waited near the entrance.
Dolly appeared about ten minutes later.
“Emelia.”
“I need five minutes.”
We began walking.
“How did things go with your father?”
“He admitted Laura came back in 1992.”
Dolly released a long breath.
“He told me what he said to her too.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
I stopped.
“But Dad being wrong doesn’t automatically make Laura right.”
Dolly looked at me.
“He was the reason she stayed away.”
“He was one reason.”
“Emelia…”
“No. I’m not asking you to defend her.”
