My husband invited his boss to our house, but just before he arrived, he looked at me with disgust and whispered, “Stay in the bedroom. I’m ashamed to have you seen like this. If my boss sees you, you’ll ruin my promotion.”

I cooked the meal, poured their drinks, and did exactly as I was told without arguing.

Later that night, his boss returned for the phone he had forgotten. The instant he saw me, he stopped cold as if he were staring at a ghost.

Then he asked a question that sent ice through my veins:

“Which hospital did you work at years ago?”

That same night, an unknown number sent me a message—and at last I discovered why my husband had been so determined to keep me hidden from everyone.
